Two-time Oscar-winner and Trinity College London Honorary Fellow A. R. Rahman has been announced as the new Honorary President of Trinity Laban, the London based world-leading conservatoire for music, musical theatre and contemporary dance. Trinity Laban and Trinity College London have a shared history, as they both originated as Trinity College of Music, and remain closely connected institutions.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in global music, Rahman is celebrated for his extensive body of work spanning film, theatre, and live performance. Known for blending Indian classical traditions with contemporary sounds, he has achieved international acclaim, winning two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and a BAFTA. His iconic compositions, including those for Slumdog Millionaire and Bombay Dreams, continue to inspire audiences worldwide.

As Honorary President, Rahman will be an inspirational figure for Trinity Laban’s students and alumni, supporting their artistic growth. His appointment will also help deepen the conservatoire's connection with the Indian subcontinent which, like Trinity College London, goes back over 125 years.

Sharing his vision for the role, Rahman said:

"We live in an age where music, dance, and technology combined are primed to explore the vastness of human expression. I am glad that the creative relationships between UK and India can continue to be strengthened, and I hope that through this role we can explore more exciting possibilities for the future together."

A. R. Rahman’s appointment further highlights the close ties between Trinity College London and Indian artists. Trinity College London is proud to support talented Indian students throughout their learning journeys, many of whom choose to study at Trinity Laban conservatoire. By funding Trinity College London scholarships at Trinity Laban, we enable students to excel in their studies and go on to achieve success in competitions and professional roles across the globe.

Congratulations to A. R. Rahman on this exciting new role!
