What's changing to Communication Skills and why?

One of the most fascinating parts of our job is listening to feedback from teachers. Their experiences and the experiences of their candidates form the guiding principles behind our syllabus revisions – an on-going review process that ensures our exams speak directly to the needs of learners. So, we're very excited to share our revised Communication Skills syllabus with you.

Our Communication Skills exams are based on real-world challenges that develop real-world skills, with tasks mirroring activities like job interviews, giving presentations and public speaking. We’ve refreshed and updated a number of these tasks - it's essential that our exams reflect today and tomorrow's education and work environments, alongside building the skills learners will need as their journeys in education and employment continue. Our revision to the Communication Skills syllabus, has, we think, created a truly relevant, engaging and personalised exam experience for candidates.

We've also simplified and streamlined the process of entering for a Communication Skills exam by combining the syllabus used for in-person exams with the syllabus used for exams taken online. With a new, single syllabus to work with, irrespective of how a candidate plans to take their exam, teachers and candidates can focus on one set of tasks and one preparation process.

Communication Skills exams build competencies that sit at the heart of the 21st Century skills framework. The experience of preparing for these exams gives candidates a set of brilliantly transferable skills for education and the workplace. We know today it's increasingly unusual to stay in one sector, on one career path, in the ways that previous generations have. Therefore, it is vital to have skills that can be applied in a range of contexts - whether a candidate becomes an engineer, designer, actor, lawyer, or any combination of the above, our Communication Skills exams build the key skills they need to adapt and succeed.
