Communication Skills: updated syllabus specification for 1 April 2025

We are excited to announce that our Communication Skills syllabus specification has been refreshed to ensure continued relevance for teachers and learners globally.

With this update, we have simplified the exam process – everything you need for both face-to-face and online delivery is now available in a single, easy-to-navigate document.

The benefits of Trinity’s Communication Skills exams

Our updated Communication Skills graded exams continue to cover a range of valuable skills and benefits for candidates:

  • Real-world skills: The syllabus includes practical communication tasks, reflecting real-world scenarios, designed to prepare candidates for personal and professional challenges.
  • Critical thinking development: Candidates are encouraged to express opinions, analyse perspectives, and justify their reasoning, fostering decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Creative expression: Candidates have opportunities to explore personal interests, boosting confidence in self-expression through various tasks.
  • Presenting with confidence: The syllabus emphasises structured communication, guiding candidates to present ideas clearly and effectively — an essential skill for academic and professional success.
  • Adaptability: Exams focus on helping candidates tailor their communication to different audiences and contexts.
  • Consistency across formats: Both face-to-face and digital versions maintain the same academic rigour and standards, ensuring a consistent experience no matter the format.
  • Flexible delivery: With options for digital exams via video conferencing, candidates can choose the method that best suits them, without compromising on quality or assessment standards.

When is Communication Skills changing?

The updated syllabus specification will be effective from 1 April 2025. From this date, the 2020 specifications for both face-to-face and online delivery will no longer be valid, and all candidates and teachers must use the updated syllabus for exams.

Why is Communication Skills changing?

We have made these improvements to ensure that:

  • Tasks are relevant and achievable for today's learners
  • The learning outcomes are clearer for candidates and teachers
  • Each grade develops a range of communication skills that reflects real-world scenarios and communication requirements for work and life
  • Face-to-face and Video Conferencing (VC) exam formats are the same.
